People will often think that we’re crazy as we can feel our tongue tingling a good 15 minutes before anyone else has noticed a strange smell in the air…like the farmers spraying their crops or a new plastic kettle boiling.

Why Glass Diffusers are Better Than Plastic Diffusers.

Overtime essential oils become corrosive to plastic. It’s thought that this may cause potentially harmful particles to be released into the air.

This is the reason that good quality pure essential oils that you buy are stored in glass (preferably dark glass to protect from sunlight damage).

An ultrasonic diffuser pretty much always has a plastic chamber inside it to hold the water and oils. The oils are diluted to around 0.20% but I still don’t love the idea of them sitting in plastic all day.

Many manufacturer’s actually specifically warn against using citrus oils in their diffusers containing plastic. In fact, you may void your warranty if you do so.

There is no need to panic if you already own and use a diffuser which has plastic components. We still like to use our Ultrasonic Diffuser (with plastic chamber) when we need a little extra moisture in the air. Like when one of our boys has congestion.

However, we are slowly trying to cut plastic out of our lives and our diffuser seemed a logical next step.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that hand-blown glass diffusers look absolutely amazing…

Choosing a plastic free essential oil diffuser…

So, there are actually 5 types of diffusers available.

Ultrasonic Diffusers produce high-frequency vibrations in the water to disperse the essential oils in a fine mist. These have a plastic chamber inside that holds the water so are no good if you want a diffuser that’s plastic free.

Nebulizer/ Atomizer Diffusers don’t need any water added. They turn the essential oils into an almost gas like state and release the tiny particles of pure essential oils into the air.

They are slightly more expensive but are often made of all glass and wood so are great if you want a plastic free essential oil diffuser.

It’s also worth noting that they are the most effective way of diffusing oils for therapeutic purposes.

Fan Diffusers are pretty basic. They literally have a fan that disperses the oils that are dropped onto a pad.

They may contain plastic and are not effective in larger spaces.

Heat Diffusers use heat to evaporate the easnetial oils e.g. candle diffusers. The problem is that the heat often changes the chemical composition of the essential oils so these are best avoided.

Evaporation Diffusers allow essential oils to be exposed to the air to evaporate naturally.

They arent effective at filling large spaces with fragrance but they are great for personal use.

Necklaces, bracelets, a hankie with a few drops of oil all allow the oils to evaporate naturally throughout the day.
